Yuan Shih Kai 10 cents coin
Today 28-Jul-2013 I visited coin shop to purchase some coin holder as I running out of stocks . Beside the shop I usually visited ,unexpectedly I spotted few small browse table being setup and noticed some dealers selling notes and coins. Without further delay I proceed to the browse table and checked out what item they are selling. They are selling varieties of world banknotes and coins. One coin that attracted me most is Yuan Shih Kai 10 cents dated 1916 Year 5. Usually most of the dealers have 1914 which is Year 3. I remember while I in Taiwan coin street I visited many shops I just come across 2 coins denomination 10 cents Yuan Shih Kai year 1916 but the condition is just VG to F and the price also not cheap so I decided not to own it. I grab today opportunity to own this coin as the price also reasonable. Currently this 1916 10 cents Yuan Shih Kai is in my collection although is just VF condition.

Yuan Shih Kai Silver Dollar are very famous in many coin collector's heart especially China coin collectors. What make Yuan Shih Kai Silver Dollar so special ?. Personally I like this coin very much
due to many varieties exists. Yuan Shih Kai Silver Dollar or Fatman dollar have 3,8,9 and 10 mint year. The rarest among this four year is year 8. In the market a lot of fake or counterfeits exists so be careful before you make up your mind to purchase, always purchase from reputable dealer. Don't think that 3rd party grading company slab coin are safe too. Please refer to the ID of the slab coin and check against the 3rd party grading company database to verify the coin genuinely.
Recently I sent one Yuan Shih Kai silver dollar year 8 for slab which I bought in an auction house . Many of my friends told me this coin is high grade fake. To me this coin is genuine although the rim look awkward. So lets wait and see....

China Republic Coin Yuan Shih Kai
Today, I would like to share about China silver dollar coin Yuan Shih Kai. In USA, most of the coin dealers prefer the name Fatman dollar whereas the China nationality prefer the name Yuan Tar Tou. Back in primary school, one of my classmates sold me the same type of coin for RM1.00. At that time, as I just started my coin collection hobby, I was totally unaware of which country, neither the year nor denomination of the coin. During my childhood, information was not easy to access. I, as a coin collector, kept it.
Back 10 years ago, I met one of my friend whom shared the same hobby as me. I sought his help to identify the country the coin originated from and the year of minting of the coin , and eventually he found out and told me the coin has the inscription "10" which meant it was 1911+10=1921 and is from the Republic of China , and that the denomination is one yuan and it is made of silver. 10 years ago, the price was around RM30 for VF condition. I slowly got interested when I know more of this coinage period.

What I observed from the current market there is high demand on this period coinage and banknotes especially those are affordable will try his or her best to obtain grade 65 and above coinage and banknotes typically graded by NGC or PCGS. Recent auction in Singapore also realize high price on this period of coinage ...eg 50 cents 1957H graded MS66 by NGC starting bid SGD500 realize SGD2,100 EXCLUDE Buyer's Premium 18%.

Straits Settlements 1920 VF $1 Dollar
Straits Settlements coin dated 1920 $1 Dollar coin weighted 16.85g with diameter 34.1mm with Milled edge. The silver contain for this coin is 0.5. The other few sibling which have similar denomination are dated 1919,1925 and 1926. Coin dated 1925 and 1926 are very rare coin and until now I do not have any luck to come across. Coin dated 1919 are much rarer compare to 1920. In the market also seen some seller selling restrike proof for 1919 and 1920. The year dated 1925 and 1926 also do exist restrike proof but in no fate to meet one of them. Below is an example of 1920 silver dollar coin of Straits Settlements King George V (1910-1936)regime.

Straits Settlement 1903B Raised VF $1
Today I will like to update on Straits Settlement Silver dollar coin dated 1903B with Raised Mint Mark that I acquired long ago . This silver dollar consider a scarce coin which is not commonly found in the market. The Weight of the coin is 26.95g with Diameter 37.3mm. The silver contain on this coin is 0.9. The condition of the coin is around VF. This coin consider the largest crown size silver coin in Straits Settlements King Edward VII(1901-1910) regime.
